An applique is a piece of fabric which is usually embroidered onto whatever you are embroidering(shirt, pants, jacket) This piece of fabric fills an area of your design, like maybe the shirt of a bear design or petals of a flower design. This is done by having a digitized run stitch in the shape of your area(shirt, petals) to tack the fabric in place. Then you trim as close as you can around the shape all excess fabric. Then you put the garment back into the machine and a predigitized steil stitch will put a nice border around the fabric, hiding an ragged edges. This is one way to do it. Now a patch is a twill material, usually pre cut into whatever shape you want, that you embroider onto, then sew the entire patch onto the garment with a run stitch.
