I'm not 100% of pricing, but if you are looking for some of the best digitizing software available. I would say have a look at either Wilcom ES or Pulse Microsystems. It might be out of your price range, but i guess it can't hurt to just have a look.

I would recommend you buy Wilcom ES. No doubt its the best around. The new version is very expensive.. about 20K... but you may find an older version for less and transfer the license.

I don't know very much about digitzing but I am starting to learn. What elements make digitizing software good versus bad?

I'm working with Gis BasePac (latest version, 7), and in my opinion you can't go wrong with it. It's pricey, but worth every penny, if you're planning to do some serious punching. Check here: www_gis-net_de
The other ZSK brand software, EPC win is also pretty good, but I guess it depends on what you're used to. I was at the IMB 2009 fair in Koln these past few days and had a demonstration of the new Tajima DG/ML software by Pulse, and that one has come very far. For serious work, nothing under 15.000 USD will do. But every punching software company has their software modular, so you can start off with the basic Gis BasePac (say Editor and Punch 1 options) and add the professional options later. Pulse is similar in that regard. I don't know the Wilcom software, so I can't judge its quality or ease of use (or price for that matter). But in any case, there's absolutely no point in going for cheaper budget software (like Drawings or Melco Live Designer or stuff like that), because you'll end up with something that will always remain basic without possibility for upgrades, if you decide to move to more complex embroidery. As I've never used anything less than the best, I can't tell you what cheap software has or doesn't have (compared to the expensive one), but keep in mind that quality really IS more expensive. |
