How to sew Patches - Page 2

I'm doing my embroidery on a Singer Futura 250. I've always wondered about the overcasting on the outer edge of a patch until I stumbled across this thread. Is there a particular stitch or machine I should be using for overcasting the patch edge?

What about embroidery machines with an edging option in their program? I select that option in my program and it looks like a zig zag stitch when I zoom in.
