Re: How to sew Patches

Hi Robert,

There are 2 ways to make patches, the easy way is to buy blank patches and embroider on them. The other ways is to completely make the patch yourself. Here i will illustrate how to make the whole patch by you yourself.
  • To begin, always take a good look at the original artwork, observe it and keep in mind what the result of the design should be.
  • Gather your material. The base material is most important before you have your design digitized. Because you have to give fabric info to the digitizer.
  • Give your artwork to your digitizer or if you can, digitize the design yourself keeping in mind the base fabric type. You will have to adjust the density, pull compensation etc.
  • Once your digitized file is ready, give it a try run before you go into production. If you find any thing that is not right or does not look too good, edit the design or have it edited till you are satisfied with the result.
  • Add fusing to the back of the patch cloth with a roller or iron, then place it into the hoop and stitch the whole design out.
  • If the patch has Embroidered Outline, very carefully cut along it with a good pair of scissors and use a Soldering Iron to smooth/soften edges.
  • You can overlock the edges if the patch is to be sewn into the flaps of a garment, otherwise the cutting along the edge would do.
  • Final check the patches before delivery.

I hope this helps you to start making patches. Experience does count. If a patch does not look good, don't worry about it. Keep it to compare with the goods ones, it will certainly help you learn better.

I never knew you use a Soldering Iron to manage the edges..

digiXpert that's is great what you have been posting, I have been looking for this also for a while. It's great that I have at last found it, and it happens to be here.

I also did not know about this -

See you learn something everyday.

Patches

Before I joined here tonite, I had an order for 24 patches.....wasn't very happy with them but I want to learn more. I'll try the soldering iron and see what happens. I used the No Frail liquid and all it did was stiffen up the patch. I made the patch with levy material two layers. Then when I finished I went back to the design and sprayed a piece of the material and put it on the back before finishing with the satin stitch. It made it look very nice and clean looking. But it was the outside of the satin stitch that bothered me. Thank you for your information. If there is more information on what materials, etc. to use could you please let me know?
